New South Mountain Dairy Volunteer Program Volunteering at a dairy is not for everyone. It is hard work. The days can be long; waiting on the next step for the cheese, or waiting for the next goat to kid. But it is rewarding. Who Can Volunteer? Able bodied adults, (and your children if they are 12 or older), who would like to have an opportunity to work on a farm, help us at South Mountain Dairy, and be surrounded by baby goats. What about young children? In April, we will open the farm for visitors every Sunday afternoon, which is a much more appropriate time for younger children to come to the farm. Kidding Season Volunteers You must be able to let yourself get a little bit dirty, not mind shoveling wet straw and goat poop, and you must be patient! Goats kid only when they are good and ready -- not before. So if you have your heart set on seeing a live birth...don't hold your breath. As a kidding season volunteer you WILL be able to bottle feed lots of babies. We have two specific shifts set aside for you to volunteer, when we can use your help. 8:00am—1:00pm Bottle Feed babies at 8:00am Wash bottles, clean barns Bottle feed babies at 11:30am 4:00pm—7:00pm Clean Barns, set up bottles Bottle feed babies at 4:30 Help feed big girls, or help with the milking. More... Cheese Making Volunteers We make cheese at South Mountain Dairy every day. And each type of cheese requires a different amount of time and attention. Last year we had a volunteer who came every Friday and ladeled our bloomy rinds for us. The day you are available will determine what kind of cheese you might be making with us. In general, duties will include ladeling or molding cheese, mixing and packaging chevre, or cutting and salting Feta. And of course, there are always dishes to wash throughout the process.
