Volunteer At South Mountain Dairy!

Cheese Making

Cheese making volunteers will have the opportunity to learn how to make a variety of cheeses at South Mountain Dairy.

We will begin making cheese again the first part of April. Each day of the week a different cheese is started. Some cheeses take two or three days to process, while others are completed in about 6 hours.

The day you work will determine the type of cheese you will have make. Volunteers will be asked to help ladel cheese, mold cheese, wash vats, mix and package chevre, turn bloomy rinds, or wax chevarti.

Making cheese is not easy work. It requires some lifting, and hours of standing. If you want to learn how to make cheese, without taking a class, this is your opportunity!

If you have been to our farm for a tour, you know our processing area is small.

We can only accomodate 1-2 people at any one time, so it will be important for us to work with you on a schedule that works well for everyone.

Ideally, we hope you will come several times to volunteer—it would be a shame for you to get trained, and then never have the opportunity to use what you have learned!

If you are interested in volunteering to help make cheese, talk to Marge or Donna at the Santa Fe Farmers Market.

Or you can click on the link "Sign Up To Volunteer" and we will contact you.
